Gophers showcase international diversity with special Golden Goldys 'hello'

Sweden, Iceland, Mali, Senegal, China, France, Bosnia and Jamaica were just a handful of the represented countries by Gophers student-athletes.

The Gophers showcased their international diversity by kicking off the 2017 Golden Goldy's awards banquet this week with greetings from around the world.

The program kicked off with a video of the student-athletes using their native language to say "hello."

Sweden, Iceland, Mali, Senegal, China, France, Bosnia and Jamaica were just a handful of the represented countries.

The players featured in the video included Leon Bristedt (Sweden/men's hockey), Titania Markland (Jamaica/women's track and field), Marino Alpeza (Bosnia/men's tennis), Palma Kaposi (Hungary/women's basketball), Muyu Wu (China/women's golf), Agnes Esser (British Columbia/women's track and field), Josip Krstanovic (Croatia/men's tennis), Runar Arnorsson (Iceland/men's golf), Emie Peronnin (France/women's golf), Heta Tuuri (Finland/women's track and field), Jakub Maly (Austria/men's swimming), Ivy Lu (Quebec/women's gymnastics), Hugrun Fridriksdottir (Iceland/women's soccer), Bakary Konate (Mali/men's basketball), Justyn Levin (Australia/men's tennis), Sofie Albrechtsen (Denmark/women's track and field), Jose Mendez (Costa Rica/men's golf) and Gaston Diedhiou (Senegal/men's basketball).


The annual Golden Goldys honor the top student-athletes and coaches on campus. Men's basketball and women's volleyball won a handful of awards after their standout seasons.
