Bethany Hasz of the Gophers placed third in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday in the NCAA track and field meet in Eugene, Ore.

The redshirt senior from Alexandria, Minn., finished in 15 minutes, 30.57 seconds behind North Carolina State's Elly Henes (15:28.05) and Notre Dame's Katie Wasserman (15:28.68).

Earlier this year, Hasz was second in the 5,000 in the NCAA indoor meet and, a couple of days later, placed eighth in the NCAA cross-country meet.

Abby Kohut-Jackson of Minnesota was 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:50.89). The redshirt senior had run a personal-best of 9:41.20 in Thursday's semifinals, breaking her own program record.

Freshman Shelby Frank of Minnesota placed 16th in the discus (177-11).

New sprint sensation

LSU's Terrance Laird was the favorite in the 200-meter race on Friday night. He had the best time in the world in the 200 this outdoor season and had won the 100 less than an hour earlier.

But Joseph Fahnbulleh, a redshirt freshman for Florida and a former Hopkins High star, caught Laird just before the finish in the 200, winning in 19.91 seconds to Laird's 19.94.

"It was close. I did my thing," Fahnbulleh said later in a TV interview. "I won. That's it. I stuck to my race plan. … It feels good. Hard work pays off."

Fahnbulleh said Gators head coach Mike Holloway told him beforehand to block out other runners: "Your own the race. Your own space."

Two videos on YouTube of the 200 final had nearly 300,000 combined views by early Saturday evening.
