The Gophers can't wait to see how running back Shannon Brooks builds off his freshman season, but Tuesday those plans were on hold.

Brooks missed practice because of a foot injury and was being re-evaluated. He made a brief appearance near the sideline and then continued receiving treatment.

"He injured his foot a little bit," coach Tracy Claeys said. "He's getting it looked at, so I'll probably be able to give you an update on Saturday."

Saturday is the next time Claeys is scheduled to meet with the media.

Brooks was a three-time Big Ten freshman of the week honoree last season, rushing for 709 yards. His 6.0-yards-per-carry average was third highest for a freshman in Gophers history. He had touchdown runs of 75, 71, 40 and 38 yards, along with three shorter scores.

With Brooks out, the Gophers gave their first-team carries to fellow sophomore Rodney Smith and junior college transfer Kobe McCrary. Smith rushed for 670 yards last season, and McCrary rushed for 108.2 yards per game at Butler (Kan.) Community College in 2015.

Line depth tested

Garrison Wright, the team's projected starter at left tackle, was in an orange nonparticipation jersey. He had knee surgery in April after the spring game.

"Garrison is going to be on a regimen like this all year," Claeys said. "He'll have on days and off days, so he's fine. He'll be able to play. We're just trying to manage a little bit of wear and tear on him."

It was the team's first day of camp in full pads, which meant more hitting. Chad Fahning, a fourth-year walk-on from De La Salle, got some first-team reps at left tackle before leaving because of an apparent ankle injury. Nick Connelly came in and got shaken up, leaving fellow redshirt freshman Quinn Oseland to take his place.

"It's part of the game," Claeys said. "That's why I say, anybody can play in T-shirts and shorts. You put on the pads, this game's not meant for everybody. But all those kids you mentioned, football's important to them, and they'll be back out here."

Etc.

• The Gophers landed a verbal commitment from Claudin Cherelus, a consensus two-star safety recruit from Naples, Fla. The 6-2, 195-pound Cherelus also had reported offers from Northern Illinois, Samford and Massachusetts. He is Minnesota's 11th commitment for the Class of 2017.

• Linebacker Cody Poock was in an orange jersey because of an ankle injury, but Claeys sounded confident that he'd be ready soon.

• The Gophers continue to limit tight end Brandon Lingen from contact drills, an issue related to his surgically repaired shoulder. "It's been tough," Lingen said. "As a competitor, I want to be out there. But I'm going to be ready Sept. 1 [for Oregon State]. Today was more of a cautionary thing."

• Other players in orange nonparticipation jerseys included wide receiver Isaiah Gentry, tight ends Nick Hart and Duke Anyanwu and cornerback Coney Durr.

The remaining schedule is favorable, but their hopes of a late-season run were dulled by a home loss to the Terrapins.
