Gophers junior Matt Welch was named the Big Ten men's cross-country athlete of the week after a second-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in the Division I Gold race.

He covered the 8-kilometer course in Falcon Heights in 25 minutes, 7.7 seconds. It was the fourth career top-10 finish for the Duluth native.

A hit in recruiting

The Gophers' 2016 recruiting class in baseball was ranked 52nd in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, the program's highest ranking ever.

It's made up of eight freshmen and one transfer, junior righthander Jackson Rose from Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kan.

One of the freshman is catcher/infielder Eli Wilson, the son of Gopher alumnus Dan Wilson, who played for the Seattle Mariners.

He was picked by the Mariners in the 37th round of the 2016 draft.

Four headed into Hall

Four former Gophers swimmers and divers will be inducted into the Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame on Friday in conjunction with the alumni meet at 6 p.m. that night at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center.

The inductees: breaststroker Jillian Tyler (2008-11), freestyler Stacey Niedenfuer Crosby (1989-92), diver Dan Croaston (1998-2001) and butterflier Martin Zielinski (1996-99).
