Minnesota scene: Gophers open Big Ten soccer by tying Penn State

Simone Kolander scored the tying goal against last year's NCAA champions.

The No. 10 Gophers tied visiting Penn State 1-1 in their Big Ten women's soccer opener.

No. 16 Penn State, the defending NCAA champions, took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute on Megan Schafer's goal. But two minutes later, senior Simone Kolander tied it for the Gophers (7-2) with her eighth goal of the season on a header off April Bockin's corner kick. Penn State is now 4-3-1.

U volleyball wins

The No. 3 Gophers volleyball team beat North Dakota 25-12, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17 in its home opener, which was one of the first-day matches in the Diet Coke Classic at the Sports Pavilion.

Hannah Tapp led the Gophers (6-1) with 20 kills and hit .500. Her sister, Paige, had eight blocks while Dalianliz Rosado led in digs with 16.

• Gustav Olofsson scored a goal and Steve Michalek made 21 saves for the Wild in a 3-1 loss to Dallas in the first game of the NHL Prospect tournament in Traverse City, Mich. Olofsson injured a knee in the second period and did not return.

• Majestic Pride, the 4 to 5 favorite, won the $41,600 John Bullit Overnight Stakes on the penultimate day of racing for 2016 at Canterbury Park.
