U gets chance to avenge 2016 loss to Tar Heels

Preview: The Gophers (7-0), off to their best season-start since the 2003-04 season, are coming off victories over Wake Forest and UNLV in Las Vegas over the weekend. The Tar Heels (3-2), who have yet to play a road game, are coming off an 86-60 victory over N.C.-Wilmington on Nov. 22. North Carolina’s two losses are by a combined five points. The Tar Heels were 15-18 last season, 3-13 in the ACC. North Carolina defeated the Gophers 91-77 last November in the Bahamas. This game is part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Players to watch: Gophers F/G Destiny Pitts, the Big Ten freshman of the week the past two weeks and the MVP of the tournament in Las Vegas, is averaging 14.3 points and a team-high 11.4 rebounds per game. G Kenisha Bell leads the Gophers in scoring (19.9), assists (7.4) and steals (2.1). Tar Heels G Paris Kea, a junior, is averaging 22.2 points per game. C Janelle Bailey, a 6-4 true freshman, is averaging 14.8 points. G Taylor Koenen, a 6-2 sophomore from Shakopee, is averaging 9.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Numbers: Tar Heels coach Sylvia Hatchell, in her 43rd season (32nd at North Carolina), is fourth all-time in victories among Division I women’s coaches. She has a 993-376 career record.

Injuries: Tar Heels guards Stephanie Watts and Destinee Walker, both starters last season, have not played because of undisclosed injuries.
