One more tuneup

Preview: The Gophers (10-2) have their final nonconference tuneup Sunday before Big Ten play resumes next week. Richard Pitino will try to keep his team from being rusty while playing for only the second time in the past 19 days because of final exams and Christmas break. Mount St. Mary’s (3-9) has won three in a row since starting 0-9, which included losses at North Carolina State 105-55, at Maryland 92-77 and at St. John’s 85-71.

Players to watch: Gophers F Jordan Murphy put his name into discussion for Big Ten Player of the Year with a 30-point, 16-rebound performance vs. North Carolina A&T on Dec. 21. He extended his school record with his 54th double-double and ninth this season. He leads the nation with 12.9 rebounds per game. Mount St. Mary’s 6-9, 230-pound freshman, Malik Jefferson, was named Northeast Conference co-rookie of the week after grabbing 20 rebounds in a 56-55 victory over American on Dec. 18.

Numbers: PG Isaiah Washington, who averages a Gophers-best 4.3 assists this season, has 23 assists and three turnovers in his past two games.
