Preview: The Tuesday night matchup between the Gophers (17-9, 6-8 Big Ten) and Michigan State (15-11, 7-7) at Williams Arena features a pair of bubble teams fighting for their postseason futures. Michigan State, a Final Four team the past two seasons, has lost six of its past nine games. And the Gophers, who were ranked No. 14 earlier this season, have lost five of their past six games.

The Gophers will win because ... They're in a desperate situation. One loss could crush their postseason aspirations. The Barn atmosphere will reflect the circumstances and propel the Gophers in a crucial home game. Trevor Mbakwe, who's averaging 13.7 points and 10.4 rebounds, has become a more dependable presence on offense. He had 17 points and nine rebounds in the 71-62 loss against the Spartans on Dec. 31.

The Gophers will lose because ... Michigan State is equally desperate. While the Spartans have underperformed in every area, they know how to finish strong, as proven by their runs in the past two NCAA tournaments. Plus, Kalin Lucas (17.7 points per game) lately has played like the star he's been for the past three seasons.
