The Gophers men’s hockey team picked up transfer Mike Szmatula, coach Don Lucia announced on Thursday. The former Northeastern forward is required to sit out the 2015-2016 season per NCAA transfer rules and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after the redshirt year.

Szmatula, a Commerce Township, Mich., native, scored 68 points (28 goals, 40 assists) in two seasons at Northeastern. He tallied 29 points as a sophomore and his 13 goals were second-best on the team. He was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2013-2014 after ranking second in the nation among freshman scorers with 1.05 points per game (39 total).

Before beginning his college career, Szmatula helped the Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) claim the Clark Cup championship trophy and was named the MVP of the finals. He was also a USHL First Team All-Star.
