Gophers, Irish getting together again today for kids

The two teams will compete in packing meals for a group called Feed My Starving Children.

January 9, 2013 at 3:13PM

About 30 people representing Notre Dame and 40-plus representing the Gophers, including the players and alumni from both teams, will be at the Coon Rapids site for Feed My Starving Children at 4 p.m. Wednesday to pack meals, which will be shipped around the world.

The two groups will compete to see who can pack the most meals. Volunteers will work as teams to assemble meals of rice, soy, vegetables and micro-nutrient powder.

Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit group founded in 1987. It provides meals to nearly 70 countries, sending them to orphanages, schools, clinics, etc. In 2013, its goal is 160 million meals.

The Gophers beat the Irish on the ice 4-1 on Tuesday.

Gophers coach Don Lucia gave his team the day off Wednesday, except for this community service event. The Irish will travel from the Twin Cities to East Lansing, Mich., for a CCHA series against Michigan State this weekend.

* After back-to-back wins over No. 1-rated Boston College 8-1 and the Irish, the Gophers have moved up to No. 5 in the PairWise ratings, which mimic how the NCAA fills out its tournament field with at-large teams.

Boston College is No. 1 in the PairWise, followed by Quinnipiac, New Hampshire and Boston University.

Then comes the Gophers at No. 5, followed by Notre Dame, Miami and at No. 8 and 9 two WCHA teams, North Dakota and Denver. Dartmouth is No. 10 and Minnesota State is tied with Western Michigan at No. 11.

So if the NCAA were starting today, those four WCHA teams would be in it. Nebraska Omaha, tied for No. 15 with Colgate, would be a bubble team, depending on who wins the postseason tournaments.

The Gophers played with more urgency, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from another conference sweep, and they lost LJ Mooney to injury in the process.
