Gophers golf team signs one of Europe's top young players

Angus Flanagan, an Englishmen recognized as one of Europe's top young golfers, signed a national letter of intent to play for the Gophers.

"Angus will arrive in Minnesota as one of the highest-ranked recruits in program history," Gophers coach John Carlson said.

Flanagan won the 2016 Carris Trophy, which goes to the winner of England's under-18 open stroke play championship.

Lynx ink Chinese player

Shao Ting, a 6-foot forward for Beijing of the Women's Chinese Basketball Assocation, signed with the Lynx. She and Lynx center Sylvia Fowles have led Beijing to two consecutive WCBA titles.

• The Gophers edged visiting South Dakota State 5-2 in baseball. Eli Wilson's two-run triple in fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie.

• The Gophers softball team moved up one spot, to a program-record No. 5 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Softball Coaches rankings this week.

• Sophomore defenseman Neal Pionk of Minnesota Duluth will be talking to NHL teams this week, according to the Duluth News Tribune, and will give up the final two years of his college eligibility. .

• Matt Moore was named the football coach at Northwestern (St. Paul). Moore had been the team's defensive coordinator.
