Gophers face Texas Tech in NCAA women's soccer tourney

November 15, 2013 at 2:37AM

The Gophers will play Texas Tech at 7 p.m. Friday in Lubbock, Texas in the first round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament.

Minnesota (11-7-2), despite losing in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament, was one of a record eight conference team to receive bids to the national tournament.

"We've come up with some key wins at good moments," Gophers coach Stefanie Golan said, "and have put ourselves in a great position going into postseason play."

This is the Gophers' eighth NCAA tournament, but first since 2010.

The Red Raiders (17-2-2) set a school record for regular-season victories.

"We expect Texas Tech to be athletic, hard, tough, physical and definitely a good team to play," Golan said.

• Cretin-Derham Hall senior Celia Kuenster, a two-time Class 3A state champion, signed a national letter of intent to play for the Gophers women's golf team. She is also a two-time Minnesota Women's State Amateur champion.
