Gophers face familiar foe in NCAA men's tennis

May 4, 2011 at 6:00AM

The Gophers men's tennis team is headed to California to face Fresno State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The winner of the Minnesota-Fresno State match will face the winner between host California and Marist.

The Gophers met Fresno State (16-8) on January 29 in a neutral-site match at UCLA earlier this season. Minnesota prevailed 4-2 in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

"We played them early in the season and they are very good," Gophers coach Geoff Young said. "It was a close match when we played before and we are looking forward to it."

When the two teams met in January, the Gophers were 1-1 and ranked No. 33 in the country. Fresno State also was 1-1 on the season and was ranked No. 28. Nearly four months later, the Gophers (19-5) are ranked 19th.

Etc. • Pinch hitter Tyler Steen's three-run double off closer Scott Matyas gave North Dakota State a 5-2 baseball victory over the Gophers in Fargo, N.D.

• Gophers senior Donald Constable was named to the men's golf all-Big Ten second team. Sophomore Erik Van Rooyen was Minnesota's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
