Gophers defensive end Anthony Smith honored by Big Ten

Safety Koi Perich and punter Tom Weston were among the other six Gophers who earned all-conference honors Wednesday.

The Big Ten announced its all-conference football teams for defense and specialists on Wednesday, and the Gophers had seven players honored.

Leading the way for Minnesota was defensive end Anthony Smith, who received first-team honors from the media and second-team honors from the coaches after finishing second in the Big Ten in both sacks (10½) and tackles for loss (13½).

Safety Koi Perich was named to the second team by the media and the third team by the coaches, while punter Tom Weston was named to the third team by the media and received honorable mention from the coaches.

Safety Kerry Brown and linebacker Maverick Baranowski received honorable mention from the media and coaches, while defensive tackle Deven Eastern and long snapper Alan Soukup received honorable mention from the coaches.

The Big Ten will announce offensive honorees and sportsmanship awards on Thursday.
