West Virginia couldn't lure the Gophers' offensive coordinator to Morgantown, but the Mountaineers did lure Minnesota's defensive backs coach back to his alma mater.
Jahmile Addae is leaving the Gophers staff after one year to become cornerbacks coach at West Virginia under new Mountaineers coach Neal Brown, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Monday.
Addae will return to the school for which he was a four-year starter and three-time All-Big East defensive back from 2001-05.
Last week, Brown offered Gophers offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kirk Ciarrocca for a Mountaineers position, but Ciarrocca decided to remain on P.J. Fleck's coaching staff.
Addae, 36, joined the Gophers last Feb. 1 after spending the previous five seasons on the staff at Arizona. He also had coaching stops at Cincinnati and Michigan and was a graduate assistant in the football video department at West Virginia in 2007.
Addae is the second Gophers defensive assistant to leave the program this offseason, for either an expanded role or a position at his alma mater. Defensive line coach Marcus West took a job as assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Charlotte. The Gophers replaced West on Saturday with veteran defensive assistant Jim Panagos, who spent the past two seasons at Temple before accepting the defensive line coaching job at Georgia Tech on Jan. 3.
Fleck will have his third defensive backs coach in as many years. Maurice Linguist coached Minnesota's secondary in 2017 before leaving to become cornerbacks coach at Texas A&M. Linguist is a Texas native who played at Baylor.
