Mankato - Grace Zumwinkle, a sophomore forward, scored two goals as the Gophers defeated Minnesota State Mankato 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in WCHA women's hockey.
The victory continued two long winning streaks for No. 2-ranked Minnesota (21-2-1, 11-2-1 WCHA) — it was the team's 14th win in a row this season and 41st consecutive over the Mavericks.
Taylor Williamson and Zumwinkle had goals in the last three minutes of the opening period for the Gophers. And Abigail Boreen's goal at 6:41 of the second made it 3-0 Gophers. The Mavericks (8-10-4, 3-9-2-1) rallied to close within 3-2 on goals by Jordan McLaughlin and Brooke Bryant in a 58-second span in the middle of the period. McLaughlin's came on a power play.
The Gophers took another three-goal lead on Alex Woken's unassisted goal with 2:01 left in the second and Zumwinkle's power-play goal just under eight minutes into the third. The two goals give Zumwinkle, winner of the Ms. Hockey Award at Breck as a senior, a team-high 18 — only two other Division I players have more.
MSU Mankato's Brittyn Fleming got the Mavericks' final goal at 10:14 of the third. Amy Potomak answered for the Gophers about four minutes later.
Sydney Scobee had 23 saves for the Gophers, Abigail Levy 28 for the Mavericks.
