Gophers coach Tracy Claeys and his football team are wearing bracelets to honor assistant coach Mike Sherels, who is on leave recovering from an undisclosed medical condition.
Sherels is attending Thursday's opener against Oregon State and watching from the coaching booth at TCF Bank Stadium. The 31-year-old from Rochester, Minn. underwent multiple surgeries in August. He has been visiting the football facility and made an appearance at last Saturday's practice.
Teresa Claeys, sister of the Gophers head coach, had maroon and gold bracelets made for the coaches and players with "#SherelsStrong" on them.
Keith Jordan is serving as acting linebackers coach, while Sherels recovers.
