Gophers baseball team splits in Carolina tournament

The Gophers split two games Saturday in the Chanticleer Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. They lost 5-2 to Elon in their first game. Lucas Bakker of the Phoenix (9-4) pitched a five-hitter and struck out six. He retired 18 consecutive batters from the second inning to the ninth.

Third baseman Mark Tatera was 1-for-3 with one RBI for Minnesota.

But the Gophers beat host Coastal Carolina by the same score, 5-2, in the second game when they scored three runs in the ninth. Connor Schaefbauer's run-scoring double broke a 2-2 tie. Dan Olinger and Bobby Juan following with run-scoring singles for the Gophers (7-4).

• The Gophers softball team (16-3) had its two Saturday games in the Mizuno Classic in Stillwater, Okla., canceled because of inclement weather.
