Gophers baseball, softball teams pick up home wins

In the first night game at the new Siebert Field, the Gophers beat Penn State 2-1 in Big Ten baseball on Friday night. Lights were installed this spring at the second-year ballpark.

Alec Crawford pitched the first eight innings for Minnesota, holding the Nittany Lions to one run and six hits. He struck out a career-high nine. Dalton Sawyer pitched the ninth for the save.

The Gophers (20-16, 7-9 Big Ten) scored on Austin Athmann's solo homer in the second inning and Mark Tatera's sacrifice fly in the fourth. It brought home Dan Olinger, who had doubled.

Moulton leads U softball again

• The No. 12-ranked Gophers edged visiting Penn State 1-0 in Big Ten softball on Sara Moulton's five-hitter. Minnesota scored in the fourth inning on Kaitlyn Richardson's double, a passed ball and a throwing error by the catcher. Moulton, a senior righthander, had 11 strikeouts in her 11th shutout of the season for Minnesota (34-8, 12-5 Big Ten).
