Gophers baseball rallies on grand slam, but Florida Gulf Coast holds lead until end

Sophomore shortstop Joe Hauser hit a grand slam in a five-run fourth-inning for the Gophers baseball team, but it lost 13-5 to Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Eagles (3-2) took a 6-0 lead with six runs in the third, three on Brian Ellis' three-run homer.

They scored two more runs in the fifth on Harrison Povey's two-run shot and five in the sixth.

Minnesota (1-4) has lost four games in a row since an Opening Day win.

Fifteen Gopher women's hockey players were named to the WCHA all-academic team, including Emily Brown and Olivia Knowles for a fourth time.

Two goalies for Division I teams in Minnesota — Dryden McKay of Minnesota State Mankato and Ryan Fanti of Minnesota Duluth — are among the 11 semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, which goes to the nation's top netminder.

Iowa's Adam Mazur, a sophomore from Woodbury, was named the Big Ten pitcher of the week. He got his first victory of the season, going six innings and striking out nine without issuing a walk in Iowa's 12-2 win over Air Force. He retired the final 16 batters he faced.

The Gophers tennis team (11-2) made the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings for the first time this season at No. 37 — its highest ranking in nearly a decade.

The Gophers' 800-yard freestyle relay placed fifth (6 minutes, 22.25 seconds) on the first day of the Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Bar Soloveychik, a freshman from Kiryat Motzin, Israel, set a program record that had stood for 17 years in the 200 freestyle with his opening split (1:33.56). The 200 medley relay, which also would have placed fifth, was disqualified,
