Gophers baseball hits four home runs in win over Purdue

Micah Coffey and Terrin Vavra hit three-run homers and Cole McDevitt a two-run shot — all in the first three innings — as the Gophers pounded Purdue 18-8 on Saturday in Big Ten baseball in West Lafayette, Ind. Teammate Jordan Kozicky hit another three-run homer in the eighth.

Coffey went 3-for-4 and had five RBI for Minnesota (23-10, 7-1 Big Ten), which has won seven games in a row and is second in the conference race.

The Gophers beat the Boilermakers 22-7 in the series opener; Coffey had five RBI in that game, too.

This victory was the 1,267th for Gophers coach John Anderson. He moved into a tie for 18th place — with former Miami coach Ron Fraser — on the Division I baseball coaches' all-time career victory list.

Former Gophers wrestler Logan Storley won a unanimous decision over Joaquin Buckley on Friday night in Bellator 197 in St. Louis. Storley, of Webster, S.D., is 8-0 as an MMA pro.

"The biggest thing tonight was when I stepped into this cage, it felt like home," said Storley, a four-time All-America wrestler at 174 pounds whose last season at Minnesota was 2014-15. "I wasn't worried, I wasn't nervous. I went in there, and did my job.

The Rev. Dave Wold, campus pastor emeritus for Augsburg, died Thursday at age 72. He was the university's pastor from 1983 to 2013 and also was the home public address announcer for Auggies' football and men's basketball games and wresting meets plus other sports at times.

• Jason Anderson of Rio Rancho, N.M., the 450 series leader in the AMA Supercross championship, placed second and sixth in the first two of three motos Saturday night at U.S. Bank Stadium. Eli Tomac of Cortez, Colo., won the first moto, Marvin Musquin of Clermont, Fla., won the second. They came into the Minneapolis event in third and second place, respectively.

• The Gophers men's golf team tied for sixth at the storm-shortened Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City. Senior Riley Johnson led Minnesota, tying for eighth with a 3-over 147 for 36 holes.

• The Gophers women's golf team was 10th after two rounds of the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus.

• Minnesota State Mankato won the NSIC men's golf tournament, edging Winona State by three shots in Smithville, Mo. JJ Svac led the Mavericks by finishing fifth with a 7-over 223. Noah Rasinski of Concordia (St. Paul) and Troy Ryynanen of St. Cloud State tied for first with 219s, and then Rasinski won the first playoff hole for medalist honors.

• Michelle Morgan, a senior women's administrator for athletics at St. Thomas, was named athletic director at John Carroll, an NCAA Division III school near Cleveland. She was a former Tommies hockey player.
