Gophers baseball falls to Nebraska

The Gophers baseball team erased a six-run deficit but lost 8-7 against Nebraska on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

A solo homer by Nebraska's Pat Kelly was the deciding run.

Nebraska improved to 31-19 overall and 11-9 in the Big Ten. The Gophers fell to 28-24 and 10-10 in Big Ten play.

The U had four players with multiple hits: Matt Puhl went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Kyle Geason was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Andy Henkemeyer and Troy Larson each went 2-for-5.

D.J. Snelten started the game and went 3 2/3 innings, allowed seven runs. Dustin Klabunde took his first loss of the season as he came in for Snelten. Tom Windle pitched 2 1/3 innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three.

The U held the lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Nebraska took a 7-1 lead with a seven-hit, seven-run inning.

Six Gophers scored in the top of the sixth to tie it. But the momentum ended in the inning's second half when Kelly lifted one deep to right field for the deciding run.

Etc. • The Gophers softball team closed out its season by splitting a doubleheader at home with Iowa. Sara Moulton held the Hawkeyes to six hits and struck out six in the first game, a 4-1 victory. The Gophers jumped to an early lead in the second game but let it slip away in the fourth inning on an Iowa grand slam.

• After day two at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the No. 25 Gophers men's track and field team is in fifth place with 33.50 points. Host Wisconsin leads the field with 62 overall points. Jack Szmanda broke the school record in the decathlon with a point total of 7,862, which was good for a second-place finish. The Gophers women's team is in fourth.
