The Gophers football team continues to pluck in-state players for its 2016 recruiting class, with the latest being Monticello offensive lineman Conner Olson.
Olson gave the Gophers a verbal commitment Tuesday, becoming the seventh player from the 2016 class to do so, and the sixth from Minnesota. The 6-5, 270-pound lineman also had reported offers from Harvard, Princeton and Yale. He currently has a three-star rating from 247Sports.com.
Pitino adds sixth recruit
Ahmed Gilbert, a 6-6, 190-pound wing from Philadelphia, signed Tuesday with the Gophers.
"We set out to add some size on the perimeter, and Ahmad brings that," Gophers coach Richard Pitino said. He is the sixth member of the Gophers' 2015 recruiting class.
• Sophomore righthander Sara Groenewegen was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's national pitcher of the week and USA Softball's national player of the week. Groenewegen was 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 22 innings. She also had two homers and hit .500 in five games.
• Augustana won the Central Region title in women's golf in Bartlesville, Okla., with a 54-hole total of 946, seven strokes ahead of the field. Vikings freshman Sierra Langlie, of Andover, was the medalist with an 11-over 227. Rachel Gray of Concordia (St. Paul)'s took third (231), qualifying for the NCAA Division II meet from May 13-16 in Allendale, Mich., as an individual.
• Lori Rittenhouse-Wollmuth was named the volleyball coach at Minnesota State Mankato. She became a Mavericks assistant in 2007 and the associate head coach in 2013. She played on Wisconsin's 2000 Final Four team.
