LONDON — Gillian Anderson has gone from science fiction to stage acclaim, winning the best-actress trophy at London's Evening Standard Theater Awards.

Judges rewarded the former "X-Files" star for her role in Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire" as faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois.

Tom Hiddleston was named best actor for the title role in William Shakespeare's blood-soaked tragedy "Coriolanus."

Jeremy Herrin took the best-director trophy for adaptations of Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" novels, while 15th-century saga "The James Plays" was named best play. "The Scottsboro Boys" took the best-musical prize.

Sunday's ceremony was attended by David and Victoria Beckham, Naomi Campbell, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ian McKellen.

Tom Stoppard was named "greatest living playwright" for a body of work that includes "Arcadia" and "The Real Thing."
