The New York Giants made a grab for salary cap space, trading two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to Tampa Bay for two draft picks.

With the unexpected trade announced Thursday, the Giants took another step in their rebuilding under new General Manager Dave Gettleman and the Bucs upgraded their defense in a bid to end a decade-long playoff drought.

The Giants will get Tampa Bay's third-round pick (69th overall) in the draft in late April. The teams also will swap fourth-round picks, with the Bucs moving up to the 102nd pick and the Giants selecting 108th.

The Pierre-Paul trade clears up only a couple of million dollars in cap space this year, but the benefit for the Giants — who were 3-13 last season — will be in 2019, when the contract sheds roughly $18 million in cap space. That will be important with safety Landon Collins and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. both possibly looking for new contracts.

The effects will be more immediate for the Bucs, who were 5-11 last season and had 22 sacks.

Pierre-Paul, who had eight sacks last season, joins a team that recently signed two defensive linemen from Super Bowl champion Philadelphia, end Vinny Curry and tackle Beau Allen.

Manziel shows stuff

Johnny Manziel, a former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns attempting a comeback from substance-related setbacks and depression, attracted evaluators from up to 10 NFL teams Thursday morning for a tryout at the University of San Diego.

Manziel, who threw 37 passes, said he is as fit as when he won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman at Texas A&M.

"It's a process right now," he said. "I think that's all playing itself out, and the quarterback market itself is playing itself out."

Gore signs with Miami

Frank Gore, the leading rusher among active NFL players, agreed to terms with Miami, a person close to the deal said.

Gore, 34, would provide depth at running back behind Kenyan Drake, who became a starter last season.

Gore has rushed for 14,026 yards in his career, including 961 last year for the Indianapolis Colts.

Reid backs off protest

Free-agent safety Eric Reid said he is not planning to protest during the national anthem in the upcoming season.

Reid has been among the NFL's most visible protesters since former San Francisco teammate Colin Kaepernick began the anthem protest in 2016. He has said he believes that is the reason he has not been signed as a free agent.

Etc.

• Chicago re-signed linebacker John Timu, who started nine games last season, to a one-year contract.

• Free-agent wide receiver Deonte Thompson signed a one-year contract with Dallas. He made 38 catches last season, for the Bears and Bills.

• Defensive end William Hayes signed a one-year contract to remain with Miami.

• Atlanta re-signed defensive end Derrick Shelby to a one-year contract. He played in 16 games last season and made 30 tackles.

• Oakland re-signed backup quarterback EJ Manuel and signed free-agent tackle Breno Giacomini, who started 16 games last season for Houston.

Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible. Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
