Get those garden nominations in

Get those garden nominations in Every year, we sponsor our Beautiful Gardens contest as a way to discover some of the great private gardens in the Twin Cities. This is your chance to tell us about your favorites.

To nominate a garden, send a letter describing the garden and the people who tend it. Dig up some snapshots of the garden in its glory or take some fresh photos this spring. Please include the gardener's name, address and phone number as well as your own. And if you have a great garden, don't hesitate to nominate yourself.

Because we've had a cold spring, nominations will be accepted through Friday. Mail them to: Beautiful Gardens Contest, Home+Garden, Star Tribune, 425 Portland Av. S., Minneapolis, MN 55488. Electronic submissions can be sent to homegarden @startribune.com.

CONNIE NELSON

NOT MADE FOR REAL SHADE

When Timber Press published "Shade: Ideas and Inspiration for Shady Gardens," it must have concluded that American gardeners are suckers for books with pretty pictures and minimum content.

In a vapid volume that was published first in Britain and appears half-heartedly adapted for the U.S. market, author Keith Wiley prattles on about Sissinghurst and Dartmoor, throws in a few gardens in New York and California and makes very few useful observations about planning and growing a shade garden.

Bottom line: Spend your $19.95 elsewhere.
