The Gapen Ugly Bug jig, produced by the Gapen Co. of Becker, Minn., and mentioned on this page as an excellent smallmouth bass lure, was developed by Dan Gapen in 1968. The Ugly Bug catches walleyes and lake trout. But its advantage as a smallmouth bait is that it can be walked across submerged rocks — where smallies hang out — while remaining snag-free. In my experience it’s particularly effective for bass when tipped with a nightcrawler or worm.
