Gameday preview: Gophers basketball at Maryland
11 A.M. AT MARYLAND TV: BTN (1500-AM)
Gophers at a glance: The Gophers (11-3, 0-1 Big Ten) led by as many 13 in their conference opener at Purdue on Wednesday, but they were called for 12 fouls to the Boilermakers' six in the second half and were unable to hold off Purdue's final run in a 72-68 loss. Five Gophers scored at least 10 points, but previously hot-shooting senior Andre Hollins was not one of them, going 2-for-10 from the floor. The Gophers led in rebounding 19-14 at the break but ultimately were outrebounded 32-31, and Purdue used four offensive rebounds to score eight points.
Maryland at a glance: The Big Ten is not an easy conference to slide into, but so far the No. 12 Terrapins have had a charmed transition. After going 12-1 in nonconference play despite some major injuries, Maryland started the league slate with a double-overtime victory at perennially tough Michigan State on Tuesday. Star forward Dez Wells scored 16 points vs the Spartans in his second game back from a fractured wrist. Also back is fellow senior Evan Smotrycz, recovered from a broken foot. The Terrapins lead the league in defensive rebounds per game with 28.3. Melo Trimble is the second-best freshman scorer in the league at 15.9 points per game.
