El Grito De Los Ancestros Procession led by the Asinganaak Singers featured more than 30 twin cities artists and organizations including the Mexica Yolotle dance troupe.Co-presented by BareBones and Festival de las Calaveras, this year's event gathered people from multiple communities to honor ancestors, remember the dead and celebrate the Cycles of Life.
In 2014 when his children were still young, Daryl Guthmiller put up a Halloween graveyard display in the yard of his 10th Avenue home in Richfield, Minn. Fast forward to now and Daryl's imagination has grown exponentially. Each year's display has gotten bigger and better, utilizing recycled and discarded materials and the help of friends. After taking last year off due to the pandemic, this year's Halloween display is Dredwood (population zero: all dead), a "once thriving community now infected, shuttered and haunted."
In the 35 years at Estes Funeral Chapel, where Tracy Wesley serves as funeral director and CEO, he has done thousands of funerals and borne witness to any number of traumas in Minneapolis' Black community. Recently, he's done funerals for Black men whose names have become synonymous with a nationwide movement toward police reform: Jamar Clark, George Floyd, Daunte Wright. But he's also done funerals for scores of young people slain in gang-related violence.
