Michigan's hockey season is not yet done, but the Wolverines had their awards banquet on Saturday at the Ann Arbor Sheraton.

The player who got the most awards was senior left winger and co-captain Carl Hagelin. He was named the team MVP, received the top scorer award and the best in classroom award. He won the same three awards, offically called the Hal Downes, Hazel M. Losh and Carl Isaacson awards last season, too.

Hagelin has 18 goals and 30 assists for 48 points with one, maybe two games to play. Michigan faces North Dakota at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the second national semifinal.

Actually Hagelin, who is from Sodertalje, Sweden, has won the Isaacson Award three years in a row. He is a sports management major.

BIRKHOLZ'S SEASON OVER

The Portland Winterhawks beat the Everett Silvertips 6-2 last Thursday, sweeping their Western Hockey League series 4-0. The loss ended the hockey season for the Silvertips, including first-year forward Josh Birkholz.

Birkholz, who left the Gophers last summer before his sophomore year, had 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points in 72 games.

The Silvertips, coached by ex-North Stars defenseman Craig Hartsburg, finished eighth in the Western Conference with a 28-33-7-4 record. The last two numbers referred to losses in overtime and shootouts. So Everett played first place Portland and was outscored 22-8 in four games.
