Friends in music scene plan tribute for Steve Raitt

A private memorial service for Steve Raitt, an integral force in the Twin Cities music scene from the 1970s through the '90s, will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Bunkers Bar and Grill in Minneapolis.

Raitt, 61, died April 4 of brain cancer in Los Angeles. While a private service was held there, his friends in the Twin Cities music community wanted to stage a tribute here for Raitt, the area's go-to sound engineer for three decades. The Minneapolis All-Stars will reunite for a performance and Gwen Matthews, Debbie Duncan, Margaret Cox and Cynthia Johnson will sing. Musicians Willie Murphy, Maurice Jacox and Bobby Vandell are among the scheduled speakers.

Organizers have specified that the program is for Raitt's friends, and Bonnie Raitt, his sister, is not expected to attend.
