Islanders' win leaves Penguins with work to do
PITTSBURGH – John Tavares broke a tie with his 37th goal of the season early in the third period, and the New York Islanders pulled away to beat the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 on Friday night.
Michael Grabner scored with less than 4 minutes remaining for the Islanders, who can finish no worse than third in the Metropolitan Division.
The Penguins failed to lock down a ninth straight postseason berth, but can advance with a victory in Buffalo on Saturday.
•BAD TO WORST: The Sabres' 4-2 loss at Columbus ensured the NHL's worst overall record for Buffalo.
•NO MORE DRAMA: The NHL fined Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw $2,000 for taking a dive during a March 30 game against the Kings.
