UND routs No. 5 Providence
• NORTH DAKOTA 6, PROVIDENCE 1: Drake Caggiula had a goal and three assists to lead No. 3 UND (4-1) over No. 5 Providence (1-2) before a sellout crowd at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The team led 1-0 after the first period on Luke Johnson's power-play goal and 4-0 after the second. Defenseman Jordan Schmaltz also had three assists for North Dakota. Zane McIntyre had 22 saves for UND; the Friars played two goalies, pulling Jon Gillies before the third period after he stopped 20 shots. Nick Ellis had eight saves in the third. North Dakota was 2-for-5 on the power play, Providence 0-8.
• UNION 5, ST. CLOUD STATE 1: The Dutchmen scored three goals in the first nine minutes to rout the visiting Huskies. Michael Pontarelli got the first goal on a power play at 1:51. Sebastien Gingras and Mark Benett got the next two for Union (5-0), the defending NCAA champion and rated No. 2 this week by USCHO.com. Senior forward Sam Coatta of Minnetonka had a goal and an assist for the Dutchmen. Ben Storm scored for No. 9 St. Cloud State (1-2) with five seconds left in the game. The Huskies outshot Union 36-27.
• PENN STATE 3, HOLY CROSS 1: Third period goals by Eric Scheid, on a power-play at 12:32, and Casey Bailey carried the Nittany Lions (2-1-2) past visiting Holy Cross (1-3-1). Ricky DeRosa had the first goal for Penn State, scoring at 13:49 of the second period. Matt Ginn stopped 47 shots for the Crusaders, who were outshot 50-30.
• MICHIGAN 8, UMASS-LOWELL 4: Zach Hyman had a hat trick and two assists as the visiting Wolverines (2-2) routed the No. 7 River Hawks (2-1-1) in the Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Linemate Dylan Larkin had a goal and three assists while goalie Steve Racine made 29 stops for No. 14 Michigan. Alex Kile, Tyler Motte, Dexter Dancs and Zach Werenski had the other goals for the Wolverines. Two goalies for UMass-Lowell combined to make 30 saves while four different players scored.
• BOSTON U. 1, MICHIGAN STATE 0: Ahti Oksanen's first goal of the season enabled the No. 12 Terriers (2-0) to edged the visiting Spartans (1-2) in the Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Michigan State goalie Jake Hildebrand made 39 saves to keep the score close. Matt O'Connor had 29 stops for BU.
• DENVER 3, MINNESOTA DULUTH 1: Defensman Joey LaLeggia had a goal and an assist as the Pioneers (3-0) defeated UMD (2-3) at Amsoil Arena. Ty Loney and Danton Heinen had Denver's other goals. Austin Farley had a power-play goal in the opening period for the host team. It was his first goal of the season. The Bulldogs outshot Denver 31-22, including 10-4 in a scoreless third period.
• MINNESOTA STATE MANKATO 3, ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE 1: The Mavericks (3-2) outshot the Chargers (0-5) 57-18. Jean-Paul Lafontaine and Bryce Gervais scored in the first four minutes of the third period to put MSU ahead 2-0. Gervais' goal, the winner, came on a power play. Carmine Guerriero had 54 saves for UAH, Stephon Williams 17 for the Mavericks.
