MADISON, Wis. - Former Wisconsin running back Lance Smith has been sentenced to 20 days in jail for assaulting his girlfriend last year.

The 20-year-old pleaded guilty last year to charges of misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct.

In court Thursday, Smith apologized and said "what I did was wrong."

Prosecutors say Smith scuffled with his girlfriend outside a store in July 2007. They say he pushed her down, hit her head on the pavement and struck her in the face.

Badgers head coach Bret Bielema cut Smith from the team last month after the Warren, Ohio native failed to comply with the terms of a first-offenders program.

Defense attorney Erick Guenther asked for no jail time, saying media scrutiny already caused his client to suffer.
