Fixit: Try elbow grease, paste on oven door

December 29, 2009 at 6:52PM

Q How on earth does one ever get the inside glass of an oven-door window clean?

A Try lots of elbow grease and a paste of baking soda, dishwashing detergent such as Dawn and a bit of water.

Or try Dawn Power Dissolver. (Check the cleaning supply aisles of stores such as Target and Walmart.) Be sure to read cautions and exceptions on the packaging. It's a foam grease solvent that you spray on, let stand 30 minutes and rinse off.

Readers, do you have any suggestions for an effective cleaning method for glass oven doors?

Orange plastic stain Q How do I remove the orange stain from plastic containers I use to store leftovers containing tomato sauce.

A Try applying baking soda to a damp cloth and rubbing the stain to remove it without damaging the plastic container. Or you could try a nonabrasive cleaner such as Bon Ami.

To prevent such stains, coat the plastic container with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based sauces.
