Fixit: Recycle gift wrap, food containers?

January 11, 2010 at 10:26PM

Q Can gift wrap be recycled? How do I know which food containers are recyclable?

A No, gift wrap is not recyclable, but some cities have curbside composting, and gift wrap can be composted that way (remove the tape).

Paper products that cannot be recycled include:

• Pizza boxes, egg cartons or boxes soiled with food.

• Boxes from refrigerated or frozen foods.

• Paper towels, napkins, cups and plates.

As for food containers:

• If the product is stored in the cupboard, the box is recyclable.

• If it goes in the fridge, freezer or microwave, it isn't.

As for plastic food containers:

• Containers numbered 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 in the "chasing arrows" symbol on the bottom on the container can be recycled at Eastside Food Co-op in northeast Minneapolis and the Coon Rapids Recycling Center in Coon Rapids. Both have limited hours. Plastic #5 containers (typically yogurt, margarine, hummus, etc.) can also be recycled at Whole Foods stores. Containers must be clean and dry.

Cold dogs Q Do dogs really need a coat in cold weather?

A Maybe not a coat, but boots are a good idea, if they'll tolerate them.

Most house dogs can tolerate short exposures to frigid temperatures. As for walks, if you are cold outdoors, your dog probably is, too. But if walking keeps you warm, it will do so for your pet, as well. For a dog with thin hair or that has been drastically shaved, a coat might be necessary.

In many cases, the cold affects a dog's feet. If a dog stops while walking and refuses to go on, it's probably because its feet are uncomfortable. That's where specially made dog boots or even an old pair of your socks can help. Of course, not every dog will wear them.

Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible. Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
