Q I have a problem with discoloration on the collars of my blouses. I am guessing that this is from the oil in my skin. I have tried many products to try to get rid of this stain, with very little result. Could you tell me what would be the best thing to use?
A Dampen the soil line with bar soap or pretreat it with liquid detergent or a paste of granular detergent and water. Launder according to the instructions on the shirt's care label. If necessary, you can use a bleach that is safe for the fabric.
If the stain does not come out, soak the garment in suds of soap or detergent and water for a few hours or overnight.
You may need to use a special stain-removal product such as Spray 'N Wash or Shout. Follow directions on the package. Wash and rinse as usual.
Stains of this nature may be especially difficult to get out of durable-press garments. It's a good idea to follow these steps with each laundering to prevent soil buildup.
You can also try Herbal Essence shampoo. In his book on offbeat uses for brand-name products, "Polish Your Furniture With Panty Hose," author Joey Green claims this shampoo, especially the oily-hair formula, removes ring around the collar.
