Q I recently moved some furniture from one part of the room to another. Because this furniture had been in place for about a year, the carpet has deep depressions where the furniture rested. Is there any way to get the carpet to return to its original condition?
A It may not be possible. There are some ways to try, however:
• Wet the dented spots with a spray misting bottle and use a fork to pry the carpet about a half-inch off the pad. Gently brush the carpet pile with a toothbrush.
• Use your fingers or a rounded object, such as a spoon handle, to gently raise the pile. Then hold a steam iron at least 4 inches above the area. Moisten the yarn with hot steam, but never place the iron on the carpet. By working the pile up and then steaming, you should be able to make the area more presentable.
• Thoroughly moisten a cloth and wring out any excess water. Then place the cloth over the crushed pile. Place a warm iron on the cloth and steam out the dents. Repeat the procedure as necessary.
• Some people have reported that they can get rid of carpet dents by setting an ice cube on each dent in the evening, and the indentations will be gone by morning.
Wool carpets respond best to such treatments. With nylon carpets, there will be some improvement. With acrylic carpets, however, the dents probably will remain. Remember that replacing furniture to the same area will cause indentations to return. To avoid denting carpet, move the furniture slightly every couple of months.
