Finances usually kill TV shows

Q Why will this be the last season for "In Plain Sight"? Also, when will "What Not to Wear" return? And will "Say Yes to the Dress" air new episodes from New York?

A Networks never say why they've chosen to end a show, but most of the time it's a financial decision -- the ratings are down and a show isn't making enough money, or the show has been around so long that it's too expensive to produce and be profitable.

"What Not to Wear" returns in May. "Say Yes to the Dress New York" comes back this summer.

'Private Practice' changes timeQ Will "Scandal," which premiered this month, replace "Private Practice" permanently? Also, is Mario Batali no longer with "The Chew"?

A "Private Practice" has moved to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Batali was on vacation a few weeks ago.

Dealing with compensationQ On shows such as "Househunters," "Househunters International" and "Property Virgins," are the people being featured offered compensation for being on the show? What about the featured participant drivers on "Shipping Wars," the bidders on "Storage Wars" and the employees on "Parking Wars"?

A Networks aren't going to give answers to these sorts of questions. I tried, but they said, "We do not comment on financial matters." So I'm forced to speculate. I imagine that it varies by TV show. I know people who participate in other nonfiction shows get paid a nominal appearance fee, so it's possible that people on these specific shows get compensation, but it's not guaranteed.

'Sell This House' is probably doneQ Is "Sell This House" with Tanya Memme and Roger Hazard coming back to A&E, or has it been canceled forever? They started with a new hourlong format in the past few months called "Sell This House Extreme," or something similar. Will that be back, also?

A An A&E publicist didn't respond to the "Sell This House" question, so that leads me to assume it's done. She did say that "Sell This House Extreme" will return, most likely this summer.

'NYPD Blue' in limbo on DVDQ Why are there no new DVDs of "NYPD Blue"? Only the first four years are on DVD. Also, is there a release date for "Blue Bloods" on Blu-ray?

A A Fox Home Video spokesman said there are no plans for more releases of "NYPD Blue." He didn't say why, but logic suggests that previous releases didn't sell well enough to warrant it. Episodes might be available via streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon.

Amazon lists no date for "Blue Bloods" on Blu-ray, so none has been announced.
