Our friends over at Mass Device reported Friday – and we confirmed – that Dr. Susan Alpert has announced plans to retire as Medtronic's senior vice president/chief regulatory officer as of April 31, the end of the company's fiscal year.

Alpert, 65, is the Fridley-based company's resident expert on the FDA, where she held a variety of positions in various divisions of the agency. (She was also a vice president at C.R. Bard, prior to her stint at Medtronic.)

A microbiologist and pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases, Alpert received her undergraduate degree at Barnard College at Columbia University in New York, a master's degree and doctorate from New York University, and a medical degree from the University of Miami.

This is the second top executive to announce departure plans from Medtronic in the past year. The last one, of course, was CEO William Hawkins.
