Terra Nova

The Swiss Family Robinson meets "Jurassic Park" in this season's most expensive gamble. It pays off, at least in the two-hour premiere, thanks to the wise decision to spend as much time with the frenzied family as with the dinosaurs. The imprint of producer Steven Spielberg is so pronounced, you half expect a cameo by E.T. ★★★ 1/2

HART OF DIXIE

Rachel Bilson plays a big-city, big-ego doctor who winds up in a town that just may be the same place where Doc Hollywood learned his lessons. The series' overly broad swipes at Alabama debutantes and the fact that only one black person appears to live within the city limits suggest that none of the creative team has been south of the Mason-Dixon line. I'm rooting for this charmer -- but only if the producers squeeze in a road trip. ★★★

2 BROKE GIRLS

The latest version of "The Odd Couple" throws together an ex-heiress (Beth Behrs) and a no-nonsense waitress (Kat Dennings) with promising results. The actresses sizzle together, but will need more support than a manager with a heavy Asian accent and a barely coherent Garrett Morris. Someone call Lenny and Squiggy. ★★★

THE PLAYBOY CLUB

This 1960s-era drama insists that Bunnies serving whiskey and winks were really groundbreaking feminists. Yeah, and guys buy Playboy for the articles. Listening to the actresses in interviews defend their participation in such a silly, sexist affair is hilarious. If the show was half that funny, I might actually watch. ★ 1/2

MONDAY'S STAR: KAT DENNINGS

  • The show: "2 Broke Girls" (CBS)
  • The role: Max, the sassiest waitress since Flo told customers to kiss her grits.
  • Where you've seen her: "Thor," "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist."
  • Why we love her: Whether it's a rock concert or a street fight, you want her by your side.
  • On her breakthrough acting job: "'Sex and the City' changed my life. I was a home-schooled kid living in the forest. I'm serious. We had to get cable to watch that episode. All my little home-schooled friends and their moms saw Kyle MacLachlan's butt. It was pretty incredible."
  • What you didn't know: She shares a birthdate with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. All three have played Bob Saget's daughter.
