EXPERT OFFERS STEPS TO DIY BANGS No one wants bangs gone bad, those ill-shaped, often too-short stumps of hair you sculpted at home in an effort to save some money. Not a good look on women or men.
Nexxus creative director Kevin Mancuso has some advice: Leave it to the pros. Many stylists trim bangs at a discount or for free. But if you're set on cutting your own, his steps help create and maintain them and stretch the time between salon visits:
Prep your hair -- dry. Wet hair tends to shrink as it dries, so trim your bangs only when dry.
Use the fine-toothed end of a comb to separate the front section of hair you want to trim and pull it to a point in the center of your face. Use a clip to hold excess hair aside.
Twist the gathered hair three or four times. This will help hide imperfections.
Hold scissors at an angle and trim at the point until you have reached the desired length. To prevent overtrimming, cut only a small amount off at a time.
Shampoo and condition hair with high-performance, moisture-rich products. Help prevent split ends and prolong the life of your bangs by using a leave-in conditioner.
Blow-dry bangs using a large, round brush. Apply a heat serum before using any thermal styling tools to protect hair from damage.
