Former Twin Cities TV news anchor Robyne Robinson has accepted the newly created position of arts and culture director for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, officials announced Wednesday.
The MSP Arts and Culture Program aims to provide international exposure for the regional arts community through rotating exhibits, performing arts and commissioned installations. The Metropolitan Airports Commission is modifying space throughout the airport to display the art, which the Airport Foundation MSP will manage.
"So many talented candidates applied for the position," Foundation Executive Director Jana Vaughn said in a statement, "but we chose Robyne for her ability to guide the direction of this exciting new arts venue and utilize her connections to draw attention to our regional arts community."
Robinson, in a statement, said she's "absolutely thrilled to be leading this new effort. Minnesota has a strong, diverse arts community. The MSP Arts and Culture Program has a wonderful opportunity to showcase our vibrant community of artists and their work to the world."
Robinson, 52, was a reporter and anchor for KMSP, Channel 9, for 20 years until 2010. In 2002, she was chosen by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak as the co-chair of Mosaic, the citywide arts and diversity festival.
She also was the owner of a contemporary art gallery for emerging artists and is the creator and chief designer of ROX Jewelry.
The nonprofit Airport Foundation MSP has operated within the Twin Cities airport since 1982. Some of its more recognizable projects include children's play areas and hanging flower baskets.
