Get out the flour, butter and eggs. The 16th annual Taste Holiday Cookie Contest is now open and accepting entries.

That cookie recipe that everyone tells you they love? Now is the time to share it with the world.

Fortunately, this competition isn't bogged down with a lot of rules.

Original recipes always grab our attention. Just look at the 2016 winner, Nut Goodie Thumbprints, from Crystal Schlueter of Babbitt, Minn., or the 2015 winner, Apple Cardamom Pecan Star Cookies, from Jana Freiband of Minneapolis.

But we're also interested in recipes you've encountered via cookbooks, newspapers, websites, magazines and other sources, and then incorporated into your holiday baking traditions.

Please be sure to include the recipe's origin, along with the story behind it, because we love good stories as much as we love delicious cookies.

(Note: We enjoy spritz, gingerbread cutouts, chocolate crinkles and other beloved holiday favorites as much as everyone else, but the purpose of this contest is to showcase what we hope will become new classic recipes.)

It's an easy process: Just send your recipe — and your story — along with your name, address, e-mail address and daytime phone number to taste@startribune.com (and write "Taste Holiday Cookie Contest" in the memo line), or to Taste Holiday Cookie Contest, Star Tribune, 650 3rd Av. S., Suite 1300, Minneapolis, MN 55488.

We'll publish the winning recipe (and four finalists) on Nov. 29 in Taste.

Along with fame, there's fortune; the winning baker receives a $200 gift card to a local cooking store. And all five of those cookies will be highlighted at the annual cookie sampling, also on Nov. 29, in the Star Tribune atrium in downtown Minneapolis (more details to follow).

Those five bakers also will be invited to participate in the cookie sampling at the Mill City Museum's Baking Lab in Minneapolis on Dec. 1.

The entry deadline is noon on Oct. 19. You can't win unless you enter!

The "winners" have all been Turkeys, no matter the honor's name.

In this photo taken Monday, March 6, 2017, in San Francisco, released confidential files by The University of California of a sexual misconduct case, like this one against UC Santa Cruz Latin Studies professor Hector Perla is shown. Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible. Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
