Emilie Buchwald, a longtime presence in the Twin Cities publishing world, will be honored in May with the A.P. Anderson Award from the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minn.
Buchwald founded the literary journal Milkweed Chronicles in 1979 and served as its editor and publisher until it ceased publication in 1987. She also founded Milkweed Editions in 1984, a nonprofit independent literary press that has published Robert Bly, Bill Holm, Patricia Hampl, Paul Gruchow and many others. In 2006, she founded the Gryphon Press, which publishes children's picture books about animal well-being.
Buchwald is the author of four books for children, including "Gildaen," which was honored by the Chicago Tribune as the best book of the year for young adults in 1973, and "Floramel and Esteban," recently reprinted by Milkweed.
She has been named a McKnight Foundation distinguished artist, and received a lifetime achievement award from the National Book Critics Circle.
The A.P. Anderson Award is given annually by the Anderson Center in Red Wing, in recognition of contributions to the cultural and artistic life of Minnesota. Previous recipients include conductor Philip Brunelle, composer Libby Larsen, Guthrie Theater artistic director Joe Dowling, and William Duffy and Bly, the cofounders of the literary journal The Fifties.
