Emerging writers awarded grants

Seven writers have won SASE/Jerome grants. The pool of 123 applicants was narrowed to 18 finalists by three judges. The seven winners were then selected by a panel of their peers.

Winners are Heather Bouwman, Paula Cisewski, Sherrie Fernandez-Williams, Michelle Matthees, Scott Muskin, Ethan Rutherford and Elisabeth Workman.

The SASE/Jerome awards are sponsored by the Jerome Foundation. They are grants of up to $5,000 to emerging Minnesota writers.

Nora Murphy will be signing her book "Knitting the Threads of Time" at noon Thursday at Borealis Too in downtown St. Paul. Borealis Too is located in Ecolab Plaza, between 5th and 6th Sts. on Wabasha, in the Alliance Bank Center.

• Tim O'Brien will speak here next week as part of the annual Pen Pal Lecture Series, sponsored by the Library Foundation of Hennepin County. O'Brien, author of "The Things They Carried" and "In the Lake of the Woods," will speak at 7:30 p.m. March 19 and 11 a.m. March 20 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. • Heather McElhatton of Minneapolis has a novel coming out in May. "Jennifer Johnson Is Sick of Being Single" will be published as a Harper Paperback Original. Her first book was "Pretty Little Mistakes."

• A book release party for Heid E. Erdrich's new collection of poetry, "National Monuments," will be at 7 p.m. Friday at BirchBark Books, 2115 W. 21st St., Mpls.
