Eden Prairie advances to Legion World Series
Left fielder Tyler Ruemmele's sacrifice fly for Eden Prairie broke an 8-8 tie. Shortstop Blake Schmit followed with a run-scoring single and second baseman Tony Skjefte, the tournament MVP, with a run-scoring double.
Eden Prairie (38-7-1) will play Midland (Mich.) at 10 a.m. Friday in Selby, N.C., in the American Legion World Series. This will be the program's fourth World Series appearance; Eden Prairie previously advanced that far in 2004, '05, and '10 and finished second in '07 and last year.
Lucia's father mourned The funeral for Mario Lucia, 82, the father of Gophers hockey coach Don Lucia, was held Monday in Grand Rapids, Minn. Mario Lucia died July 29. He was a teacher at Bigfork High School and Grand Rapids Middle School for 38 years. He also was the head varsity football coach in those two communities for a combined 20 years.
Etc. • Lynx guard Seimone Augustus was named the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week. She averaged 16.7 points and shot 47.5 percent as the Lynx went 3-0, counting Sunday's victory at Los Angeles. Connecticut center Tina Charles was the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
• Guard Isaiah Zierden, who averaged 18.8 points for Benilde-St. Margaret's as a junior last season, has committed to Creighton University. He is the son of former Lynx coach Don Zierden, now an NBA assistant coach with the Washington Wizards.
• The Saints opened a four-game series against Wichita with a 6-2 victory Monday in Midway Stadium, scoring four runs in the eighth inning.
