SANTA ANA, CALIF. - A 22-year-old man was charged Friday with three murder counts, drunken driving and a host of other crimes in the crash that killed Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others.
Andrew Thomas Gallo ran a red light in his minivan early Thursday and broadsided a car carrying Adenhart and three friends, police said. Adenhart died at a hospital, hours after pitching six scoreless innings in his season debut against Oakland.
Torii Hunter and John Lackey stood on the pitcher's mound, holding Adenhart's jersey, as the Angels observed a moment of silence before Friday night's home game against the Red Sox.
Hunter touched a picture of Adenhart on the wall in center before taking his place in the field. Angels players wore a No. 34 uniform patch in tribute.
