Douglas: Thawing out, and then seasonably cold

“Hey Paul, quit staring at the Doppler and tell me we’ll see a few more plowable snowfalls in the coming weeks.” I wish I could, but until further notice we are stuck in a colder/drier-than-normal pattern that favors wind-whipped clippers. I don’t see any big snowy dumpings into late January.

For the record, MSP has only experienced two “plowable” snowfalls this winter, coming in late November and early December. During a typical winter (ha!), the Twin Cities experience an average of seven snow events of 2-plus inches. We’ll need a very active February and March to catch up.

Today’s weather headline: Another thaw Monday and Tuesday (when it may be mild enough for a few rain showers), then colder weather the last 10 days of January. Highs mostly in the teens to near 20 degrees. Cold enough to get your attention, but a far cry from “consecutive days or weeks below zero” cold. That said, I do expect a few subzero nights within 10 days.

Historically, the next two weeks are the coldest of the year. We’ll get a taste, but not the minus-20s and minus-30s our parents endured.
