Douglas: Snowy, icy Wednesday morning commute

It’s no “Snowmageddon,” but parts of the Twin Cities metro could see 4-6 inches on the ground.

“How much snow in my yard, Paul? If it’s more than 4 inches, will you come out and shovel my driveway?” Let me ponder that. Do you mind if I use the metric scale? Sounds way more impressive.

Predicting snowfall amounts is akin to hitting a moving target. Weather models are pretty good and getting better, but even with AI they will never be perfect.

Tuesday’s model runs nudged the axis of heaviest snow farther north again, closer to Little Falls and Mille Lacs. There’ll be a shorter “burst” of snow in the Twin Cities, with a few inches, but that’s a long way from “Snowmageddon.”

Not to minimize Wednesday morning’s commute: Temperatures below 32 degrees mean wet roads will be icy. Winds will gust to 45 mph. Far northern suburbs may still see 4-6 inches.

Arctic air is often preceded by snow, and with a deep layer of numbing air in place, more (plowable) snow is possible from late Friday into early Sunday. This second storm may bring heavier amounts at MSP. An early taste of January is imminent.

Yes, raking season has abruptly ended. Scraper season has arrived. Good luck.
